NFL Scouting Combine

I got the opportunity to work with the NFL a couple times now. My first was March of 2022 at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. I was brought on as a multi-track record tech for a bunch of interview pods that were going on all at the same time. We set up these 16 interview pods all going though one QL5 and then took direct outs via Nuendo to record. The set up was quite simple, a bunch of RIO boxes to capture the single podium mic from each interview pod, and output to a pair of daisy chained speakers on sticks.

.

The hard part of the gig was not the setup or the early call times, it was keeping organized. All 16 interview pods would go live all at the same time. While there was a schedule with the names of the player and what pod they will be at when, there were often last minute changes. For instance, a player wouldn’t show up for whatever reason, and they would throw someone else on their pod in their time slot. So I had to rename on the fly, and to mark that missing player, because he will eventually show up later somewhere else.

We had two local union A2’s watching all the pods and radioing us when the players finished, or started their interview. While they might have all started together first thing in the morning, some less popular players wouldn’t have many questions to answer and get up and leave, or more popular players would use more time and go over. So I was constantly starting and stoping records on a specific pod when one player finished and a new one started so I could only capture that single player and rename it appropriately. I did have a back up running off all the pods that I never stopped as a backup though incase I made a mistake, luckily that never happened.
